Why Study Film?Why Study Film?
Film remains at the cultural centre of countries throughout the world. By the end of your degree you will have acquired a clear knowledge of world cinema history and the main critical debates that accompany its study at degree level, as well as the ability to undertake independent research. You will be well prepared to take up employment opportunities in the expanding media industries.
Film Studies at Southampton
Cinema is over 100 years old; on this course you will study works from the earliest days of its history right through to the most recent releases, from Hollywood and Europe, from the Lumière Brothers to Kathryn Bigelow.
All members of Film Studies staff are active researchers; we see teaching and research as closely related, and aim to offer our students first-hand access to recent discoveries, new ideas, and current debates in Film.
Southampton itself provides excellent opportunities to see films outside the course, on campus at the Phoenix Film Society and the Students' Union Film Society, and in the city where there are two mainstream multiplex cinemas. The Harbour Lights cinema and The Screen at Winchester offer exciting programmes of both popular and independent releases.
Teaching Facilities
Most courses are taught through a combination of lectures, screenings and seminars. Based at the University's Avenue Campus, we have 35mm, 16mm and DVD screening facilities, and a growing video and DVD library. We offer specialist practical units in creative writing and video production.
You will have use of a video production suite with four Dell workstations, which run AvidPressDV, and one Sony DSRII DV deck. A new purpose-built Mac creative suite has recently opened for video production and editing, consisting of 9 Mac Pro machines, each with two 20” monitors, post production software (Final Cut), and connections to VHS/DVD players. Accompanying equipment includes the latest HD DV cam production facilities. The room is also equipped with the most up-to-date interactive presentation technology.
Your future career
These degree programmes will enable you to seek employment in a number of related fields, not least because of your proven ability to understand audiences and the ways in which film is used to manipulate situations.
Film graduates go into many different kinds of careers including teaching, commerce, industry, the civil service and, of course, the media industries including the press, radio, TV and online journalism.
For example, one of our graduates is now working as a film editor, while another is an award winning BBC journalist. A good number of students each year also go on to postgraduate study at Southampton or elsewhere, including our Film MA and Film and Cultural Management MA programmes.
Transferable skills
All Film courses are designed to provide you with a solid grounding in the history and critical understanding of film and television as arts industries, while building a series of key skills to enhance your employability.
Our assessment is designed to improve your interpersonal communication and your ability to work in a group, give you experience of conducting primary research in archives and libraries around the country, and develop your organisational and time-management abilities. While all our programmes offer some opportunity to gain practical skills, you can also get involved in filmmaking at the Wessex Films Society.
Life after postgraduate study
89 per cent of our full-time postgraduate students who graduated in 2003/04 found employment within six months of leaving the University. A further 6 per cent chose to continue with full-time study.
During your postgraduate studies at the University you will acquire a wealth of skills thanks to the training and personal development opportunities within Graduate Schools, research groups and course curricula. When the time comes to look to your future, whether you aim to remain within academia or pursue a career elsewhere, you will be well placed to move on. Our graduates have an impressive track record of success in the global careers market.

@темы: кино
